Friday Round-Up
A bunch of news for today – as most of you know, our inaugural workshop was this last weekend in Anaheim, and boy was it rockin’! Great participation, great input, and super feedback from everyone. On the anonymous feedback forms, every ranking was either a 9 or a ten (and there were more of the latter than the former)! Such a rush to see so much appreciation, and Denver is sure to draw an even bigger crowd. There’s only a few early bird seats left (3 I think), so if you haven’t registered yet – better sign up while the … Continue reading
Talk about cool!
I had the unique pleasure of connecting with none other than Nicole Young (Nicolesy) from TWIP fame recently. We chatted things up quite a bit on Skype, and as luck would have it, the recording was running! So, for LDP episode #41, please welcome Nicole to the show by stopping over and giving her a big thanks. The show notes follow below. Learning Digital Photography: Episode #41 Stock Photography – Taking the Plunge! News – Trevor Current – Thanks to Trevor for helping out with the news – check out his site at www.currentphotographer.com and don’t forget to follow him … Continue reading
Episode #36 – The End is Near!
Okay, the end isn’t near, but the end of the year is near, and it’s time to start doing wrap-ups all over the internet and other publications. Heck, even Time Magazine has a photos of the year, as did Rangefinder, and many blog authors are doing the same. So, in the interests of always “doing something different”, I am inviting everyone that listens to the podcast and reads the blog to share your own thoughts of 2009 in the comments. Here’s the questions that I always think about at the end of the year: What was my best photo? What … Continue reading
Tuesday Top Five Nuggets
In lieu of a software review, today instead just a couple news nuggets for you. First up, the finalists of the $500 giveaway have been determined. These six finalists are being considered to win a pretty impressive package of stuff including a Thinktank Photo Multimedia Bag System and a complete set of the Topaz Labs Photoshop Bundle. View the finalists gallery here. Next up, a recommendation: Even if you aren’t a subscriber to the Rangefinder Magazine (although you should be), you can read the current issue online here, (it’s a PDF download) which includes in the most recent issue an … Continue reading
Wacom Winner!
For those of you that don’t follow the twitter news and stuff, you may not know that I cut a finger pretty badly late last week. A visit to the doctor on Thursday pretty much confirmed that I needed to keep from using that hand for at least 24-48 hours. This meant no keyboard or computer use. SO Friday, when I started to disobey the doctor (shame on me!), the spousal unit found out and intervened. Since then, we had a nice little weekend trip to Santa Fe (only about 6 hours away from Denver) with some friends. We took … Continue reading
The first ever Comment Contest!
After a short (and unexpected) break from blogging yesterday, here’s a Friday Free-For-All for you! Here’s where reader input is going to be what makes or breaks the content – that’s right, I am putting it all on the reading audience. You can link to your own site in the comments, and the “Comment Luv” plugin will show the most recent post for fellow bloggers too. Here’s what the content topics are to chose from (you can pick one, two, three, or all of the topics to address in your comment): What are your favorite iPhone/iTouch applications (for photography)? Who … Continue reading
Great Scott, Mat, and Contests, Oh My!
Heh, cheesy headline, but they all seam together on this week’s episode of Learning Digital Photography! Yup, the podcast is done, and for those that didn’t catch my Twitter tease, this week I had the distinct pleasure of talking with none other than Scott Bourne on the show! If you don’t know who Scott Bourne is, then you’re living in a cave. Scott is a regular contributor to Mac Break Weekly, This Week in Photography, and owner/operator of PhotoFocus. You can find him there, via his Bourne Media Group online presence and a bazillion other places like Photoshop World, Aperture … Continue reading
Walk, listen, and ask…
Lame blog post title segue alert – too late! This week’s podcast is completed and available from the always generous hosting of the folks over at Personal Life Media, and over on iTunes, so download from your favorite option and enjoy! Here’s the show notes: I give a roundup review of the Scott Kelby Worldwide photowalk, along with a more detailed back story on the Canon Confession, which was outed yesterday here on the blog. Rich Charpentier of The Airstream Chronicles also stops in for a really great interview with me – we probably could have talked for quite a … Continue reading
Win, Listen, and Bang!
This week’s show is a doozy – I talk about the latest contest, (#3 for 2009), have a fun conversation with Jason Loucks, then tackle some tips on photography fireworks. Of course the show always takes care of a couple listener questions and answers, so it’s 45 jam-packed minutes of photography fun. Here’s the show notes: The Third Photo Contest, sponsored by OnOne software. Rules and entry information are posted on Tuesday’s blog, and you can enter your photos here. Here’s the sites and twitter folk we talk about during the show: www.freelanceswitch.com www.smashingmagazine.com www.tutsplus.com www.css-tricks.com & Chris Coyer on … Continue reading
Friday Fab Five
For something new here on the blog, I thought it might be fun to share some of my favorite keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. The idea here is that people will share their top five in the comments area and we can get an idea of many more keyboard shortcuts than we ever could have found out on our own (unless of course you are some Photoshop guru like The Photoshop Guys and the trainers/instructors of the world that do this for a living and already know all the shortcuts.) So, anyway, here’s my Friday Fab Five Photoshop shortcuts and what … Continue reading
Finally some good news – it’s Friday!
Well, there’s some other good news too. Wacom delivered the something to me door yesterday to review here on the blog. I’ll be doing a more detailed write-up for both Windows and Mac in the near future, but thought y’all might be interested in the unboxing – seeing what you get from the good folks at Wacom when you order a: BAMBOO FUN! So, here’s a little teaser video for those that are interested: This might be fodder for an upcoming contest or giveaway, but only time will tell, so keep your fingers crossed. In the meantime, here’s the rest … Continue reading
Super Sigmas, photo walks and seminars!

Adobe updated the ACR to 5.4 (still in beta), and is downloadable here … Continue reading
When it rains, it pours!
Well, yesterday I had a great conversation with Tom Hogarty, senior Product Manager for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom for inclusion in the upcoming podcast. In my excitement to finish the post production side, I came downstairs at 3am to my man-cave, and found that Jason Moore had finished an article I sent him for possible inclusion in his “Workflow Friday” series, and posted that out there. Egads! Thanks to Jason for that outlet as well. What’s kind of exciting about that article, is that not only did Jason find it interesting enough to include with the collection of folks that have … Continue reading
Artist Statement Appeal – the power of the pen
On this weeks show, I take a look at the power of the pen – the artist statement. For those of us with aspirations of sharing our work with others via art shows, galleries, and contests/competitions, the value of the artist statement can make the difference between getting into a show, gallery or other event and buying a ticket. So, if you want to learn what the artist statement is, how to write one, and things to consider, this is the show for you. Here’s the show notes: News Links – Ansel Adams Video Getty ventures into China for Asian … Continue reading
Thursday Thoughts with… Scott Eccleston
I am happy to report that the weekly series where I interview fellow photographers and share their thoughts and perspectives here on the blog. This week, I’d like to welcome Scott Eccleston to the stage. Scott has his own blog and shares his thoughts and ideas on a regular basis so be sure to stop over at his site where he shares Weekly Photo Tips! Without further ado, here’s the latest in the revived Thursday thoughts series, with Scott Eccleston! Q: Hi Scott, welcome and thanks for agreeing to participate in the latest edition of the Thursday Thoughts series. Since … Continue reading
How do you like to sound?
In preparation for the next podcast, due in no small part to a technical difficulty with Garage Band, I’ve set up a dedicated computer and recording space (call it my dedicated recording studio) and the audio quality is off the charts better than anything I’ve done before. Ironically, the new topic for this weeks podcast is also about sound – the sound of shutters and how they can impact the feel of the camera, and how they can effect a moment is significant enough to warrant consideration. Make sure you tune in for this one from the good folks over … Continue reading
News, Artists, and Inspiration
Welcome to the show notes for week #17 of Learning Digital Photography. Here’s the show notes for this week’s podcast… First off, I’ve done some further tweaking to give a little more consistency and structure to the show for your listening pleasure. The three segments that I am going to try to regularly stick to will be: News, Events, and Information from around the community and industry – here I’ll share nuggets, information, and other useful snippets from the most recent days and weeks of activity within the photography community. Sometimes I’ll share information that’s available elsewhere, and other times … Continue reading
HDR, Web links, and a podcast!
So, this last weekend I went on the photo meetup group outing for the month of February into Eldorado State Park, south of Boulder, and had many an opportunity to capture some landscape and macro work. Some great views were had and I only hope that they all come out as well as this one did. While hiking up a trail of slippery snow and ice (it was cold out Saturday morning), I saw this fissure that was pretty intense looking because it was only partially lit. I thought about it for a second and decided to bracket some exposures … Continue reading
Another Magazine Article!
Well, I completely lost track of the week and did not get the weekly podcast recorded in time for publication today. So, while I could have gone with the alliterative “Forgetful Friday” blog title, I figured that would have been a little too on the nose. So, instead, I’ll share the exciting news that the latest issue of PhotographyBB magazine has been published. Dave Seeram, editor-in-chief, announced it a few days ago on the website, so do stop over and download the latest article now. Make sure you take a peek at the article Photography Food for Thought (pgs 19-22), … Continue reading
A Dose of Inspiration
For those that are keeping up via feed reader, you may have noticed some Flickr additions over the weekend. As the “What’s This?” arc came to completion, I thought it might be fun to compile all the images into their own dedicated set on Flickr for everyone to enjoy. As it turned out, I had not been keeping up with cross-posting images there as much as I had thought, so it took several visits back and forth between the site files and Flickr to get everything together. The Flickr images show up as their own feed posts, so there were … Continue reading
The Show Must Go On…
While the folks at Personal Life Media continue to work behind the scenes at getting the show re-branded, I’ve been encouraged to keep producing podcasts so, this week, the podcast returns. I have a couple fun segments including a more detailed back story from The Boneyard Beach post earlier this week, the Think Tank Photo Review, and some blog/podcast housekeeping including the inside scoop on how you can win the Streetwalker bag I reviewed! Be sure to get this week’s episode so you know what to do. The bag is valued at $140!!! As you may have noticed if you’re … Continue reading
Thursday Thoughts with… Crash Taylor
Welcome back, and a happy Thursday to everyone. My apologies for the apparent “no blog” post yesterday. Just when you think all is going well, work goes and serves up a crashed server that sidetracks you completely all day. Needless to say, it looks like it’s still not back up this morning, but the blog must roll on! So, today, we’re gonna stick to our regular schedule of the Thursday Thoughts series. This week, I have the honor of sharing and enjoying the company of the blog with Crash Taylor. An excellent photographer, and interviewer himself, this is kind of … Continue reading
