Nothing But the Tail Lights

In the course of pursuing creative inspiration, I’ve often found that just picking a subject and sticking with it can be a good exercise in creativity.  Taking something and focusing (no pun intended) on that subject and only that subject can help you see things differently.  The exercise is good whether your subject is flowers, thumb drives, coffee mugs (which I’ve done in the past), or in this case – tail lights! [cincopa 10624678] As you can tell, some of the shots are pretty cool, others – well, not so much.  Some are out of focus, some are boring, but … Continue reading

May We Salute You

The May pool of photos that everyone contributed to was quite stunning – the listening and reading audience is quite a talented group and some of the images on here were really incredible.  Full of vibrance, vision, color and passion – it was really hard to narrow things down – but I give you here just a few from the wonderful month of May.  There really is no better way to say it than: May, We Salute You I’m pretty sure the artist name matches with the description and caption, so be sure to stop by not only the LDP … Continue reading

Tuesday Top Five Nuggets

In lieu of a software review, today instead just a couple news nuggets for you. First up, the finalists of the $500 giveaway have been determined.  These six finalists are being considered to win a pretty impressive package of stuff including a Thinktank Photo Multimedia Bag System and a complete set of the Topaz Labs Photoshop Bundle.  View the finalists gallery here. Next up, a recommendation:  Even if you aren’t a subscriber to the Rangefinder Magazine (although you should be), you can read the current issue online here, (it’s a PDF download) which includes in the most recent issue an … Continue reading

Wacom Winner!

For those of you that don’t follow the twitter news and stuff, you may not know that I cut a finger pretty badly late last week.  A visit to the doctor on Thursday pretty much confirmed that I needed to keep from using that hand for at least 24-48 hours.  This meant no keyboard or computer use.  SO Friday, when I started to disobey the doctor (shame on me!), the spousal unit found out and intervened. Since then, we had a nice little weekend trip to Santa Fe (only about 6 hours away from Denver) with some friends.  We took … Continue reading

Great Scott, Mat, and Contests, Oh My!

Heh, cheesy headline, but they all seam together on this week’s episode of Learning Digital Photography!  Yup, the podcast is done, and for those that didn’t catch my Twitter tease, this week I had the distinct pleasure of talking with none other than Scott Bourne on the show!  If you don’t know who Scott Bourne is, then you’re living in a cave. Scott is a regular contributor to Mac Break Weekly, This Week in Photography, and owner/operator of PhotoFocus.  You can find him there, via his Bourne Media Group online presence and a bazillion other places like Photoshop World, Aperture … Continue reading

Reviews, Contests, and Blog Notes

Lots to cover today on the blog so I am going to get right to it.  First up, I’m trying to maintain the schedule of hardware reviews, so rather than go into detailed analysis, I am just sharing an abbreviated review here today on the Canon 28-135mm lens.  Also up on todays blog, the OnOne Software giveaway finalists have been announced!  Last up, a few administrative things to address.  So, without further ado, let’s get started: The 28-135mm Review The luck of this review is due to the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk.  I had been hearing good things about this … Continue reading

Airtight Viewers – Web Gallery Options Reviewed

Initially, this week was supposed to be the second in a series of software review posts to take a more detailed look under the hood at Photoshop Elements as an alternative to Photoshop Creative Suite.  Truth be told though, the more I poke under the hood with Adobe’s Lightroom, the more hooked I get.  One of the absolute best features (in my opinion) is the web gallery options available to you in Lightroom.  The options are endless!  You can go from standard HTML, to Flash-based templates, and hybrids, with customizations galore. One of my favorites though, is how Adobe integrated … Continue reading

Making Money off your Photos

In the tightening economy, many of us are considering additional ways of supplementing our income, and as hobbyist photographers, we all have wondered at times whether we could parlay our hobbies into sources of revenue.  For a short time I even considered this blog as a possible method for generating revenue.  By and large though, I found that the blog was not well-positioned to be a significant source of revenue, for a number of reasons. So, I decided to turn the idea arond, and think about whether my photography could be considered as a source of revenue.  Thus far I … Continue reading

Photo Galleries Galore

I’ve been playing around with the SImpleviewer Flash concept a little lately.  In looking at how others are implementing it on their blogs, I was thinking that CB could use a dedicated photo gallery to share and exhibit some photos. Well, as a temporary release, I’ve put a few together using the Auto-viewer format.  It has naturally been customized a little, but is up and viewable right now!  Check out the images I’ve included here:  CB Photo Galleries They are mostly images of colors and textures thus far with a few other test images thrown in to determine sizing.  Hopefully … Continue reading

Finally Friday – A Week in Review

Yes, it’s finally Friday, and with a long weekend ahead of us, we can enjoy a little more down time. Mine will start about 30 seconds after I finish this post! Anyway, some updates on the Orphaned Works Act – some very passionate members of the NAPP community have been working together to get a website up to get the word out on a broader basis, so keep your browsers tuned to www.defendyourart.com over the next few days as updates, links to news items, and representative info will be going live. Additionally, posters and graphics are being compiled for people … Continue reading

Meaningful Monday Materials

Yeah yeah, I know, sometimes the alliteration gets old, but it really is a disease for someone who enjoys to write! Anyway, resuming the content on how to create web galleries, I thought that today would be a good day to share the next chapter draft with the reading/listening/viewing audience. This go around, it’s Chapter 3 which talks about some of the basic coding concepts. If you are going to be customizing your web galleries from software like Lightroom or Photoshop, some basics of coding concepts are helpful to get the end results you need. Thus, I’ve put together a … Continue reading

Wednesday’s Webinar

Okay, it’s not really a webinar, it’s a tutorial, but since I usually publish the tuts on Tuesdays, I had to come up with a clever name for the post title, and webinar was the best I could think of…it’s corny, but what the heck. This week, the final installment of creating web galleries using different applications. Previously, I had looked at how to create web galleries using both Photoshop and Lightroom, and discussed some of the basics involved there, as well as some of the pros and cons of each. In this third and final segment, I look at … Continue reading

Photoshop Reloaded – Web Galleries with a twist!

A couple weeks ago I did a tutorial about how to create web galleries using Photoshop. As one of the steps, I advised to sort through your images first and pick out the ones you want to put in your web gallery into a dedicated folder to make the process easer once you start in Photoshop – well, that advice was a little short-sighted. I got my most recent issue of Photoshop User (from the great folks over at NAPP), and read through an almost identical tutorial, with one notable exception – they used Bridge! That’s right, you can use … Continue reading

Here we go again…another round of web galleries!

It’s Monday again, and I’ve been working on the first round of revisions to my set of articles on creating a web gallery. As the age old saying goes, if you really wanna learn the nitty gritty of how to do something – try teaching it! To take that to the next level, try teaching it without an audience! After sharing my first rough draft of the Introductiion and Chapter 1, I saw some areas where improvement was (and possibly is still needed.) I tapped away at that over the weekend, since the weather turned out to be such a … Continue reading
