<itunes:summary>As we approach the half century mark in the Learning Digital Photography Podcast series, Erik Bernskiold joins us on the show for another session of doling out some good photo tips – great ways to take and make better pictures and take your photography to the next level.  For those that are grabbing from the iTunes feed it should be published shortly… you know the drill!     For the rest of the world, here’s a direct link to the show for listening to during the day or your workout/commute/etc.

Skype gave us a few issues so there is one point where the audio gets a bit garbled, and there was just no good way to clean that up, so if you hear a little scratchy noise, it goes away after a few seconds (and a cheesy soundbite transition) Just remember, two hands on the wheel if you’re driving!  Happy shooting and we’ll see you back here again tomorrow!

That leaves a question mark on many peoples minds – How do you set up a photo blog?  What system should you use?  Are there any special features or “must have” elements?  Kerry Garrison (of Camera Dojo) and I tackle this popular question on this week’s show, Episode #48 of Learning Digital Photography:

<itunes:summary>The June contest came to a close on Sunday, and after looking through all the images after anonymization (a.k.a. my wife downloaded them) and import to Lightroom, the winner has been determined.  (Drumroll please…)  And the June winner is:

Simplicity in composition (there is really no place to go but dead center, and your eyes move all around there to see the legs kicked back, the vehicle lowering away (almost a perfect K, which is a compositional approach) is really well done.  It’s also tack sharp and the color appears to be spot on with the brilliant blue of the sky.  Finally, the implied speed and action of the activity  kept true to form for the challenge, so congratulations are in order for Matt Beaty!  Check out this image and the rest of his work over on his Flickr stream and website! Let’s also not forget that the folks at Lexar were kind enough to share these cards with us to help continue the contest series, so thanks to them.  Thanks also to the rest of the entrants – it really was a crowded field this month.  Next month I suspect it’s going to get even more crowded though…
*****
Speaking of next month, with the June contest now closed, it’s time to gear up for the July contest, which starts immediately!  As you may recall from the last podcast, I had the good fortune of talking with Senior Product Manager Tom Hogarty about the release of Adobe Lightroom 3 on the last podcast, and in the course of the show, was happy to announce that July will be the month where we are giving away a free copy of Lightroom 3!  Valued at $299 retail, this is going to be one for the ages (again)!
Many thanks to Adobe for contributing to the continued success of the giveaway series.  All the details for the giveaway are now live on Flickr, so stop in there to submit your best image!  Don’t forget to read the Contest Guidelines and the Rules of Engagement before submitting.  With how cool and sleek and slick Lightroom has become (and with the news being what it has been in current events lately), the theme for this month is:  SLICK!  Interpret as openly as you like (just keep it family friendly), and good luck to everyone!
As if two piece of contest news is not enough – we have about 6 days left in the comment contest where 3 lucky people will get a free copy of “Taking Stock” by Rob Sylvan (NAPP Helpdesk, iStock Reviewer and Author).  If you’ve not submitted a comment, this is a free book just waiting for 3 random peoples names to be drawn from a hat (or online number generator as the case may be), so share your own comment soon before time runs out!  (One comment per person.)
I was going to share a final announcement but am completely drained from all the buzz here…so get out and shoot, comment and have some fun – more exciting news tomorrow!  (Hint:  It’s about workshops!)

<itunes:summary>With the latest release of the Creative Suite from Adobe, I have added yet another item to my learning library.  For those of you that follow me personally, you also probably know that I have recently added two projects to my learning library:  databases and PHP.  Neither of these is very intuitive to me, so it’s taking a bit of patience to remind myself that we all have learning curves, and that learning is always a process fraught with frustration.
I take it for granted some times that certain technologies just “make sense” to me, and wonder why others can’t get it…the answer is because it is new to them.  Even in the field of photography, I often find myself in unfamiliar waters, and it can be a bit daunting.  So, when you feel you are at your wits end in learning some new procedure or technique for capturing and developing your images, remember, everyone is has some cross to bear with technology.  Zack Arias did a humorous bit recently on his blog that illustrates this to certain degree (especially the last bit where he is reading a magazine and…well, I can’t do it justice, so just watch it here!)
Another one that this reminded me of was the conversion to digital TV that just happened last year.  For many of us, it seemed “about time”, but for others, it was likely frustrating.  I must admit, that right now, db admin stuff feels much like this to me:

This was sent to me via email, and I can’t find a reference for it online.  The creator is Spike Feresten and the show is called “Talkshow” .  If anyone can share a reference that he has somewhere online, email me or share it in the comments.  Regardless, it very much typifies my frustration with SQL right now…
So, where are you in your learning process?

<itunes:summary>As creatives, we often can find ourselves just not seeing anything new…even if given a theme to go out and discover.  In times like these, it’s sometimes beneficial to stop looking outward and start looking inward.  I am not talking about Yoga, meditation, or even pontificating the meaning of life.  Although these are equally viable options for getting out of a creative rut, I am talking about looking at your own past work.  While we all have done this from time to time, I found a recent little twist on this practice helpful.  Look back at your work with a theme in mind.
The monthly contests here encourage everyone to go out and capture new work with a theme in mind, and creating new work is always a good thing, but sometimes, when given a theme, and then looking back at archives, you can find new meaning in older images, when looking with a different perspective.
For instance – I was reading an article over on Nikon (yes, I read Nikon’s website – we all know it’s the photographer and not the gear by now, right?) about the value of sounds.  The article was talking about pet photography and that you can get certain expressions if you catch the right sound (full article here:).  It got me to thinking – what would the lack of sound look like in an image?  So, I decided to close my eyes and try to imagine what a photo of silence would encompass:  the serenity of a flower, the peace of a beach or the darkness of an evening or morning sunrise or sunset when it’s just you and the landscapes, even the chill of the day with snow covering everything in a blanket of quiet.
It gave me such a burst of inspiration from my own archives that I decided to go through and pick these specific ones out with the idea of “silence” in mind…  Of course I couldn’t just leave something like this alone – so I added a little taste of music that I thought would be appropriate:

This is, of course, just my own interpretation.  What are your thoughts when you think of a series of images that captures “silence”?  Would you set it to music?  How many images would you include?  Here I had 8 images…was it too many or not enough?  Sound off in the comments, as it’s really the viewer thoughts and input that is always so valuable!

As you can see – nothing too difficult or fancy to tether a Droid, which makes for great file manipulation and transfer, which means photos are also easily archived across multiple platforms!  How are others tethering their smart phones?  Just as easily?  I didn’t like the Touch having to go through iTunes and be “licensed” on each computer.  Thoughts and feedback welcome in the comments!

Happy shooting!  If you have your own time lapse productions, feel free to link them in the comments too!  See you back here again tomorrow…

<itunes:summary>As teased a few hours ago (Mon night – see previous post), Adobe has released a second beta of the forthcoming Lightroom 3.  Since there’s not much out there on it, I figured I’d give it a whirl to share a couple screenshots of what you can expect to see. Here’s the Beta 2, installed on the Mac:

LR3B2 (that’s my nickname for it), has added several features, and the ones I am most excited about include:

The ability to manage your video files (short video demo):

Addition of point curve control (like in Photoshop)

Native tethered shooting ability for both Canon and Nikon cameras (a full set of gear was not immediately evident – this is just a first look)

I’ve not had a chance to test the tethered shooting yet, but based on some videos and other resources Adobe has put out, here is a list of the cameras that support native tethered shooting mode for LR3B2:

Canon

1D Mark III
1Ds Mark III
5D Mark II
5D
7D
Rebel T1i

Nikon

D3X
D3S
D3
D700
D90

I am sure more will come, but I am not going to hold my breath for the Canon 40D as it’s no longer even in the Canon line-up (but I am betting that soon other models will become available, including the 50D…)
Last but not least, the added feature for Lightroom 3 that is so exciting (again, for me), is Luminance Noise Reduction.  This is going to save untold time bouncing back and forth between Lightroom and Photoshop on those occasions where I need a little more granular control than previous versions of LR gave me.
More news is sure to come out as the big boys from places like NAPP and others were likely in the know from much earlier than I, and they will have a whole slew of videos, blog posts, and articles covering every nuance.   But, here’s a quick first look that I learned from watching the site for news, installing the beta 2, and giving it a quick whirl to show a few screen shots.  Hope you enjoyed it – let me know your thoughts on the new features!  Are these enough to make you think about upgrading?  What other features would you like to see in an upgrade?  Will you still use Photoshop for your photography work flow or do you see yourselves going solely to a Lightroom environment?  Sound off in the comments – I’llbe back tomorrow with more photo goodness!  Happy shooting!
P.S.  Only four more days to enter the Flickr Giveaway for LDP – winner gets a Cheetah Quickstand!
P.P.S.  I’d also like to thank everyone that has shown interest in and support of the latest mini e-book offering in the store:  49 Photo Tips which is still for sale in the CB eStore and I’ve kept the price down too, so it’s only $1.99 – that’s less than a nickel a tip!

The community quickly sprung to action, pointing him in several directions, and it occurred to me that I had never done this sort of tutorial before!  It’s not too difficult but there are some pitfalls to be aware of when dealing with borders and logos in photos, especially if you are trying to program these steps into an action or script.  Suffice to say, I figured this was as good a time as any to jump back into Photoshop and keep the digits (and brain) fresh!  So, here’s a new video tutorial on creating borders and logos!  Enjoy!

Your thoughts and feedback are welcome and encouraged as always!  Thanks for stopping in, have a great week, and be sure to stop back in tomorrow for more photo goodness!  Oh yeah, and don’t forget the March contest is in full swing where the winner will go home with one of these super cool Cheetah Quickstands – the theme is wild and the link for submissions is here!  Happy shooting and we’ll see you tomorrow!

<itunes:summary>For those of you that have been following the blog for a long time (and let me know who you are, because I want to ask why!), you may recall that I used to put out video tutorials on how to do various things inside of Photoshop.  After plodding around with that for a while, I came across the gurus of NAPP and realized that several were already doing it, and doing it much better than I ever could.  So, rather than re-inventing the wheel, I abandoned the video tutorials in favor of just sharing my “wisdom” in the form of the written word (blog posts and articles) and audio tips (which are now part of the Learning Digital Photography podcast).
Well, when I recently twittered with excitement over the newly released calendar of some of my favorite images for 2010, someone asked me about the template I used to create those images.  I honestly answered that I didn’t really use a template as the website www.lulu.com just let me upload the images and they handled the rest.  On realizing that they were talking about the images on my Photography Website, I recalled that a template was used for those images.  I could have done a written post about this, but those take a lot of time to put together (lots of screen grabs, lots of writing, and lots of uploading), so I instead decided to put together a new video on how to create a template for your photos inside of Photoshop.  The video may take some time to load, so please be patient as this is a self-hosted video production!

Keep in mind – this is just one way – in Photoshop there are always many ways to reach similar results, and as the old adage says, there’s more than one way to skin a cat!  Anyway, this is for you @mitz!  Enjoy, happy shooting, and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!  Oh, and lest we forget, there are very few days left in the January giveaway!  For your chance to win a free copy of Photomatix Pro from the folks at HDR Soft, get your Circle-themed photos in the Flickr Contest Thread by midnight on Friday (Mountain Time – GMT-7).
P.S.  For those that like my videos and want to see the archives, check out the Learning Resource Page from the sidebar for more materials.  And as an additional side note, this is post #600.  No fuss, no muss, no fanfare, but yet somehow I landed back on video tutorials – which is kind of how it all started!  Somehow, ,ind of poetic, eh?

<itunes:summary>It’s been a while since I’ve done a hardware review, and I realized that when the folks at Expo Imaging had sent me the Rayflash to review, I had also received an Expodisc.  I know I recorded the video for it, but for some reason it never got published, as the two were meant to be posted back to back.
In any case, here is the long-awaited review of the Epodisc from the folks at Expo Imaging:

First – what is the Expodisc?  It’s simply a disc that defracts light as it passes through your lens in order to determine the proper white balance setting for your images.  Why is this a good thing?  It’s a good thing because light doesn’t always fall into the specific categories designed by your vendor.  It’s not always daylight, tungsten, florescent, etc.  These vendor pre-sets can get you close, but if you want spot on white balance settings in camera, this is definitely the way to go!  Here’s the short video I had put together a while back on how it works:

Do I like the Expo Disc?  Absolutely – and if I were in an environment where lighting conditions change often, or it was tricky to determine (say those lights in gyms with the green phosphorous), these utilities are a godsend.  Landscape environments can also be tricky when you are dealing with things like snow, shade and sunny areas at the same time, and portraiture can be tricky too – say you have a bride’s wedding dress, the whites of the eyes, and the teeth for sample areas – which do you set?  Use the ExpoDisc and it will be spot on every time!
Thanks again to the folks at Expo Imaging for lending me the review units of the Ray Flash and the Expo Disc.  It was a pleasure, and for those interested in learning more about their products, please visit their website here.
Happy shooting everyone – be sure you get your shots in, because there’s limited time left in the Circles contest for a lucky participant.  here’s the Flickr thread – keep on posting and keep on shooting!  We’ll see you back here again tomorrow!

For instance, when I was much younger, I took piano lessons for seven years.  Endless scales, arpeggios, and the whole nine yards filled my practice sessions for days, weeks, months, and well….years!  When I moved onto college, other interests bended me away from the piano, probably because after seven years I realized I was never going to be a Mozart.  Nevertheless, I enjoyed the practice and occasionally I return to tickle the ivories from time to time.  The photography vision has been clouded this week, and I found some solace in the keyboards late Friday night.  So, I plugged in the M-Audio keyvoard to my Mac and pounded away for a while as my fingers tried to remember their proper positions.  I remembered again that I am no Mozart, but I do have some creative ideas again, all because of a little ditty I put together.  Does this ring a bell for any of you?

Have a great weekend everyone!  Happy shooting, and we’ll see you back here Monday with the results of my creative challenge!

Not only did we get a little piece of history about the place, we got some great shots of the building itself.  With several hundred to parse through over the weekend, I’ve trimmed it to the slide show below showing some shots from both around Brighton and the Armory itself.  The other thing that was exciting about this is that after expressing an interest in volunteering our photographic services for any events, they seemed interested in taking us up on the offer.  We shall see what may come of these serendipitous meetings.  It just goes to show you that it’s always a good thing to support the arts, and always good to think about networking – even when you are just having fun on a photo walk!
Here’s a couple links for those interested in learning more about the area and the Armory:

http://heartofbrighton.org/ArmoryVideo.htm
Enjoy the slide show and we’ll see you back here tomorrow – happy shooting!

Don’t forget too, the January Flickr contest thread is open, and the Circle theme should be producing some interesting images.  Speak your creative vision and enter today!

Do yourself a favor and not only set some concrete goals, but share them with colleagues, peers, and friends.  If you write a blog, announce them!  Make your readers hold you to your goals.  Not only will you be more likely to achieve your goals, but your readers will also become more vested in your blog!  It’s very empowering, and I would encourage everyone who writes a blog or has a web presence to do something like that.
Uh oh, I just  realized something – I kind of set myself up there didn’t I?  Okay, yeah, it was kind of intentional, but it came from the heart!    My biggest resolution for this year – finish projects!  I can’t tell you how many projects I have started to get distracted by other projects, ideas, or things, only to never make it back to the original project.
For example, I had set a project once of getting all my resume and personal information in an easy to access text file for copying and pasting into database driven websites like USAJobs.  So, it was off to getting various records for inclusion, including my military service.  That led me to the filing cabinet (insert Psycho music here)!  Before I knew it, I had spent 3 hours organizing the filing cabinet into tabbed folders of all things non-job related.  Gas receipts, electric bills, and all sorts of other things kept popping up at me saying “file me file me file me”!  It got so bad I even found myself at the local Staples getting tabbed divider label things for each category instead of getting the original project done!
In keeping with the idea of finishing projects, I would like to share the completion of project #1:  The Sunrise Shoot at Rocky Mountain National Park!  I mentioned it in December before the holidays and I had every intention of completing this sooner, but first the layoff, then Christmas, then New Years, and many other distractions pulled me away.  No more!  The trip is completed, the shots processed, and the videos montaged!  I give you, ladies and gentlemen, the RMNP trip:

So, project #4982163 has been completed…I have all the rest to do!  What are your resolutions and projects for 2010?  Do they include getting a circle shot ready for the January Giveaway?  (Announced here yesterday…)  Here’s the link for the contest thread on Flickr in case you missed it!
Share your own thoughts and ideas, resolutions and projects in the comments and we’ll help keep you on track!  In the meantime, keep on shooting, have a great weekend, and we’ll see you back here on Monday!  Happy Shooting!

<itunes:summary>With the increasing popularity and discussion of video (we are always hearing about the convergence of photography and videography), I thought it might be interesting to take a look at the different video hosting services, and look at their functionality.  So, earlier today I recorded a video using Quicktime Pro on the Mac, and tried uploading it to 3 different popular services:  YouTube, Vimeo, and Animoto.  Here are the videos in that order, followed by my thoughts on each:
YouTube:

Thoughts
Price:  It’s free!  Nothing beats free in my book, and with the competitive landscape of technology, this is pretty hard to beat.
Quality:  The thumbnail does not look right, but that’s a minor nit…on playback it seems pretty good.
Ease of use:  Another pro here as well…it was easy (and quick) to upload.  It took less than a minute to upload, and adding the video details was also easy.  You do need a Google account to do this though, but since that is also free, the downside here is hard to find.
Accessibility:  It was VERY easy to find the embed code to copy/paste into the blog.  And YouTube/Google is pretty recognizable as far as things go, so it’s going to be hard to compete here.  But, let’s look at the other services…
Limitations:  The only one I can find is that you are limited to videos under 10 minutes.  You can do HD quality, up to 2GB per video (so no data size limit), with no waiting in line for video conversion or anything like that.  At first I thought 10 minute limit was, well…limiting, but after looking at the other two services, not as much.
Vimeo:

Review of Video Hosting from Jason Anderson on Vimeo.
Price:  It’s free…kind of.  You can go the free route, but there are downsides which I will go into shortly.
Quality:  It seems on par with YouTube in terms of video quality,
Ease of use:  Also on par with YouTube, and the dialogs are very similar, so kind of a 6 of one, half dozen of the other sort of comparison here.
Accessibility:  Vimeo videos are just as accessible as YouTube ones are, anyone can see them if you set them up the same, so kind of an interesting dichotomy here…
Limitations:  Your limitations with Vimeo are that you can only upload 500MB of data per week.  This may sound like a lot, but when it comes to video, that could get eaten up pretty quick.  I didn’t see a length limit on Vimeo, but could be wrong here.  Another limitation on the free account is that you have to wait in line for your videos to get uploaded.  I uploaded the video 20 minutes ago, and still have another 40 minutes to wait before it will start the conversion for me.  If you upgrade your free account to the Vimeo Plus one, you can get 5 GB of content, HD quality, no ads, and for $60/year or $10/month.  Not too pricey, but again, in a competitive economy, it’s something to consider…
Animoto:
Not reviewable – as it turns out, Animoto only allows 30 second videos for free – everything else is a paid service.  The price is cheaper than Vimeo for the service at $30 per year, and it does seem to have no limitations on video length or things of that nature, but the fact that you can only do a 30 second video on their free service seems rather lame.  I realize that we need to be quick and to the point with our content, but 30 seconds?  Really?  This one gets a major thumbs down from me for this and on that basis would not recommend it.
Self-Hosting
In the interests of being as broad in the review process as possible, I thought it would help to also include the self-hosted option as one worth considering.  There are some caveats to this though, as services and limitations would vary from one hosting service to another.  I use Dreamhost, and I like their hosting, so figured it would be worth showing that here. (You can sign up from the link or from using the promo code CBPROMO to save 50% on [...]</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Welcome to the show notes for week #17 of Learning Digital Photography.  Here’s the show notes for this week’s podcast…
First off, I’ve done some further tweaking to give a little more consistency and structure to the show for your listening pleasure.  The three segments that I am going to try to regularly stick to will be:

News, Events, and Information from around the community and industry – here I’ll share nuggets, information, and other useful snippets from the most recent days and weeks of activity within the photography community.  Sometimes I’ll share information that’s available elsewhere, and other times I’ll offer my own perspectives on the news and events that shape the industry.
Authors and Artists from within and related to the industry of photography are also an area I would like to devote some time to since the Thursday Thoughts series has not seen much attention lately (not that I am planning to either – I think it’s just on sabbatical!), and I had the good fortune of actually sitting down with an area professional recently which provided a source of inspiration for this weeks show.
Sources of Inspiration – As artists I think we are always searching for and discovering new sources of inspiration.  Often these can come from well known venues such as photography magazines, galleries, and the like, but I am not adverse to featuring unusual or new sources either.  This week, I will be featuring an unusual source of inspiration, so make sure you stop in for this segment too!

To find out why these links are all up and on the blog, make sure to stop over to Personal Life Media and grab this weeks show!  For the link grabbers, here you are:

TWIP on the Panasonic
The Online Photography on the Panasonic
PhotoJoJo
Photographic Dictionary
Canon Firmware
Adobe Updates
One Million Faces
Peggy Dyer
One Million Faces Photo Galleries (The first 5 are kinda cool! )
Sunny 16
David Ziser

That’s it for today all!  Enjoy the show, and we’ll see you back here bright and early tomorrow (well, maybe not so early, as I still have an on-going problem with the sandman!  LOL)  Happy shooting!
P.S.  I am still including a copy of the show locally, so you can grab it from here if you like too.  Don’t forget, we still have a poll going on re: Twitter and Blogging, so if you’ve not voted yet, vote here!

So, this last weekend I went on the photo meetup group outing for the month of February into Eldorado State Park, south of Boulder, and had many an opportunity to capture some landscape and macro work.  Some great views were had and I only hope that they all come out as well as this one did.  While hiking up a trail of slippery snow and ice (it was cold out Saturday morning), I saw this fissure that was pretty intense looking because it was only partially lit.  I thought about it for a second and decided to bracket some exposures to see if it would turn out with some HDR massaging.  Not only did it turn out better than I would have thought, I was also very pleased with how Photomatix did with this.  I would highly recommend this software to anyone interested in HDR work.  Not only is it more intuitive than Photoshop, the results were much more gratifying!  You can buy Photomatix for PS, Lightroom and for either Windows or a Mac over at www.HDRsoft.com.
Some other web links I learned about recently also include www.fotoblur.com and www.usefilm.com Both are much more cognizant and respective of photography copyright than other social and photo networking sites like Flickr and Facebook (we all know about the Facebook Terms of Service fiasco, right?).  One thing I like about both Fotoblur and Flickr is that you are limited in how many images you can upload daily.  This requires you to be more careful about what you publish, and as a result, you are more thoughtful and objective of what work is worth posting and sharing online.
Last but not least, the podcast that I had intended to put out last week was delayed for a few days as I put the finishing touches up on a home improvement project.  (We finished out one of the basement rooms – expect to see some photos on that makeover forthcoming!)  The good news is that not only is the basement room on the verge of completion, but that the podcast is up for this week.  Naturally, the title of the podcast will match the blog post title, as the show notes follow closely to todays content.  Stop on over to Personal Life Media for the show, or pick it up in iTunes!  (Don’t forget to leave your thoughts in the review section of iTunes too…the more the merrier!)
Until tomorrow, when I’ll have some more HDR shots to share, keep on shooting – hope all your shots are good ones!

The meat segment (aka middle segment) I talk about some new sources of inspiration – specifically the grocery store and in a restaurant.  The next time you are at a restaurant, take your camera because the table makes for a great tripod, and you can get some really cool shots.  Case in point, is the new gallery I have set up here at the blog, titled Tabletop Photography.  I’m also sharing a few sources of inspiration from the grocery store too (tune in tomorrow for those).
The listener questions were really good ones from meredith and Jason, where I take a look at the value of carbon fiber and the issue of when and where are we permitted to photograph.   Last but not least, the photo tip of the week concerns copyright and registering your work, so make sure you stay tuned for that.
Lots of photo goodness to share, so make sure you tune in for the audio, and stop by the blog to pick up the link for the photo gallery.  Photos, podcasts, and questions galore.  Enjoy the day and we’ll see you back here tomorrow!  Happy Shooting!
