I've got 3 go to lenses that will be around for a while, and one backup lens that's been with me since my Canon 10D.My 24-70 2.8L, the 17-40mm L, and the 70-200L (like Jon's comment above me) all travel in my pack wherever I go. Those are my 3 primary lenses, although I do have others! The other lens that seems to always be around is my 28-135. I bought that from B&H oh so long ago, and it's in one of my Pelican cases for the "just in case I need it" moments.

Jason,<br

My 70-200 2.8L IS is without a doubt my favorite, but... for all around use the 24-105L f4 works wonders (still want the 24-70 2.8 though) and is the 1 lens I have on my camera most. I too lament the 40D passing from the current Canon lineup. Oh well, progress... ;-)

There are quite a few, also in primes.Focussing is one thing but i think the Part that has to be moved the fastest inside a lens is the diaphragma. It has to be closed to the right apperture for every every image (except if you are always shooting a the biggest available apperture. But I have to agree with you, that a lens gan last really long if handled propperly, so the questions if there are many moving parts or not is merely nitpicking.I for example just picked up an old EF 70-210 1:4 from an person who gave away the whole SLR equipment. It is a bit loud and slow on focussing but it still delivers great image quality. and 210mm on a 40D gives a nice Zoom (and it nicely complements my kit lens with 17-85mm, which is not as bad as people tend to tell around).
For sure, it is no comparsion to the 70-200 2.8L I'm sometimes renting, but it is still a nice lens.Marco

70-200L f2.8
85 1.8
17-40L f4Great post!
