Forgetful Fridays

With my crazy work schedule, I completely forgot to write the Friday Funnies, so now it’s also the Forgotten Friday! So, what happened that was funny this week? Well, anyone that follows photography found out about the newest additions to the Canon and Nikon line-ups.  Canon announced the 50D, and Nikon announced the D90 on the heels of Canon.  While this may just seem to be news and events, what’s funnt about this is that there have been rumors about the next bodies that each would be releasing for a long time now, and most were resigned to waiting until … Continue reading

Thursday Thoughts v2.0

As I jump back in the saddle of topical discussions, I am going to actually share an experience I had with the readership today.  You’ll notice the title of the post today includes a v2.0 – why is that?  Well, because there are many versions of many things out there, and as photographers one of the things that is easy to lose sight of is the versioning of our firmware. See, cameras, like any other device in todays technologically advanced world, can have flaws that are discovered after it is released to the public.  Most of the time the bigger … Continue reading

No Blog Wednesday

As suspected, the long day yesterday prevented putting together any sort of coherent post for today, so it’s official – today is “No Blog Wednesday”. I will officially share the “What’s This?” answer from last week (Week 8). That was a shot of a candy wrapped in plastic. I captured that at Hammonds Candy Factory here in Denver when we visited in the spring before deciding to make the move out. COngrats to those that got it right and thanks to all who shared their thoughts in the comments. I’ll have a “What’s This?” later this evening if all goes … Continue reading

The 50D has surfaced

I got home tonight to quite a few emails of people asking if I’d heard of the 50D yet and whether there was any validity to the rumors flying around the internets.  While Canon does not confide inme, I’ve seen some pretty intriguing information, and at the risk of perpetuating rumors, I will share some of what appear to be the more valid remors.  Most specifically intriguing is a Chinese website for Canon that shows a banner of the entire EOS line, which includes a 50D on the right hand side of the banner.  Hard to say whether it’s legit … Continue reading

P&P Blogroll

As Jason Moore gets settled down in his new digs as the new Web Graphics Designer for Southern Tier Athletics/Worldwide Sports Supply (congrats dude!), we’re filling in again to provide you with the latest and greatest weekly activity for Photoshop and Photography folks (a.k.a. his famous Weekly P&P).  Michael was out and about a lot this week, so it’s just me and Andy filling in.  Thanks Andy for taking Michaels portion as well.  Anyway, here is my portion of it (filling in the middle with I through P). Indograhams – Again, another fabulous Friday skyline from Scotty.  He also went … Continue reading

Photowalk checklists

As all the hubub over the Scott Kelby (NAPP) photowalk hits a fervorous peak, we are all getting everything together for the walks, looking forward to meeting new people, visit old friends, shoot in new areas, and just enjoy the camraderie of a photowalk with your friends and peers. However, this is still an occasion where you are taking your gear out on a shoot.  So, it is always good to stay organized and make sure everything is ready to go.  What does this mean?  It means prepping your gear beforehand.  And of course, checklists can be a handy way … Continue reading

What’s This? – Week 8

As readers have reminded me, I fell behind the 8 ball a little on sharing a “What’s This?” pic since we started our move from SC to CO.  So, now that things are settling down again, the weekly photo challenge returns with gusto.  See if you can decipher the object I’ve cropped down to this: Any ideas?  Feel free to share them in the comments section below.  Correct guesses win…well, not much, just bragging rights.  But bragging rights are better than nothing, eh?  So venture a guess, who knows – you may get to brag! In other news, the NAPP … Continue reading

Brush it, Baby!

There is always something coming up that throws me for a loop and last night, it was a “thermal event” on my main Windows computer that I do my image editing from.  The room that the computer lives in is a tad warm, and as you may recall, we’ve been without A/C for a while now.  I am going to have to do something to keep that computer cooler, but for now, it means my 40D shots are not editable in PS3 because I only have a license for it on the one computer.  I have CS2 on the Mac, … Continue reading

Feedback and More Fodder

First off, I’d like to thank everyone who has been taking the time to share their thoughts and feedback both in the comments and via email – it’s always fun to get the insights of others. A few people had mentioned some loose threads though that I’d not tugged on in a while, so I thought I’d give an update as to the activities and status of those projects. (As an aside, I am probably becoming famous for starting projects and never finishing them – I do eventually, it’s just that I keep adding more projects so the others start … Continue reading

Weekly P&P #89 (for Jason Moore)

While Jason Moore is still in transit to his new locale, we’ve got another installment of his Weekly P&P to share between myself, Andrew, and Michael.  Be sure to stop by their blogs to get the rest of the P&P updates.  Here’s the stuff I saw from the last week that seems noteworthy: Lightroom Killer Tips – Matt K. – Always a plethora of information, Matt shares a little nugget about LR and the fact that v2 allows you to change resolution when editing Black and White Photography – David Beckerman – More infrared imagery to enjoy – particularly the … Continue reading

The last of the panoramas (for now)

As promised, I have a black-and-white version of the original panorama from the trip across the country finished. Also, as I finally had some down time with the camera, I took off in search of some sunset scenery (I am used to sunrise shots from SC, so now I have to switch to sunsets being on the western side of the country!). I found one two days ago, and the scene really screamed “this is a pano” to me, so my first shots from Colorful Colorado are also for the benefit of panoramic photography! Enjoy these shots. The latter of … Continue reading

No blog Wednesday

Well, it was bound to happen – a few wrinkles hit the fan and I got pulled into an entirely different direction.  So now at 10:45 pm, I still have not written the post for today.  Call me a slacker, call me lazy, or a procrastiner, or whatever you like, just make sure you include “employed” in the list!  That being said, I did not get to the content I wanted to get to today for the blog.  Rest assured though, I will be back again tomorrow with the promised black-and-white version of the panorama from Friday, as well as … Continue reading

Panoramas and a Tutorial

Here’s another panorama shot I put together, as promised, and wit more of a crop toward the traditional framing where the width widely exceeds the height. Windmill Panorama (Large) Windmill Panorama (Xtra Large) The windmills were a nice effect though I thought in the composition.  I did run out of time for the b/w version, but should have that up tomorrow (just too beat to keep going – I don’t know the Scott Kelby’s of the world do all they do..) For those interested in an audio podcast of how I put this together, feel free to download this weeks’ … Continue reading

Weekly P&P (for Jason Moore)

While Jason M. is in the middle of his move, a couple of us volunteered to assist with the Weekly P&P. Make sure you visit Andy and Mike’s blogs for the other two portions. Here is what’s been going on in your favorite blogs for the past week: Lightroom Killer Tips – by Matt Kloskowski. Tune in to read up on the Volume Browser – something I didn’t even know about before, thanks Matt! Black and White Photography – by David Beckerman. David has taken an interest in Infrared photography lately, and he’s got some pretty cool results this week. … Continue reading

Some Friday Photos

As promised earlier this week, I finally have some photos to share. In the middle of the drive across country from SC to CO, I stopped a few times and saw some possibilities for panorama shots. Keeping in mind a couple tips, I switched my camera from landscape mode to vertical (a.k.a. portrait) mode, and captured several scenes on my 40D. Here is the first installment of my attempts at panoramas: So, you’ll notice that the color on these is a little off, and the exposure is a little dark. I realized that I would have issues though, if I … Continue reading

We have a winner!

Wanna hear something neat?  Listen to Leo Laporte’s show #478, dated August 3rd, 2008.  It’s not in the show notes (which is why I couldn’t find it), but my call-in made it on the air.  Go to the 48 minute mark, and you’ll hear me asking about SEO for WordPress.  I was driving through St. Louis at the time, but nevertheless, it was kind of cool to hear the Q&A on The Tech Guy.  Thanks to Leo Laporte for pointing out to m e the space issue that web browsers can have.  As you all know, that has since been … Continue reading

Photo Finalists

Okay, I’ve narrowed things down to the finalists for my first ever photo contest.  This was really hard because all had strong shots and the execution and composition of each was also equally impressive.  However, a decision has to be made, so here goes: Finalist #1 – Tim Solley Finalist #2 – Brian Reyman Finalist #3 – Alvin Finalist #4 – David Phillips Tough choices, eh?  I should have a decision by the end of the week, as the rest of today will be spent unpacking the Pod (college kids bailed on me…*sigh) Happy shooting, watch those apertures, and we’ll … Continue reading

Tuesday Teaser

The deadline for the photo contest is officially passed.  There were a total of 14 submissions total, so thanks to all that participated.  I’l spend the next day or two looking the photos over and decide on a winner, 2nd and 3rd place.  It will be a tough decision as there were several very cool shots.  If you’re interested in seeing all the photos submitted to the contest, stop over at the CanonBlogger photostream on Flickr here. In other news, I know I had said an audio podcast would be available today, but it turns out there’s something called “Fair … Continue reading

Playing catch-up

Wow, quite a bit happened in the last week while I’ve been out of the proverbial internet loop.  Adobe released Lightroom 2.0, a worldwide Walkabout was announced by Scott Kelby over at NAPP (with prizes too!), and CanonBlogger had several entries appear in my first ever photo contest, titled “Photo Freedom”. Okay, so that last one was a shameless self-plug, but it is a free contest to participate in.  I should also state here for the record on the contest, that the photographer retains all copyrights to their images.  This is just for fun, and to hopefully generate some more … Continue reading
